We have the privilege of watching Mommer & Papa's desert tortoises for a year and a half (Minnie Mae Lemonada-17 yrs, Dusty-5, Franklin-5). We actually have had them since the end of July...and the kids have loved every minute of it. They are so low maintenance. Wait...except for the runaway, Dusty. He's kind of a rebel and has managed to escape more than a handful of times.

Oh and then there were a few dramatic rescues from near-drownings during some Arizona monsoons. Other than that, these turtles are so un-assuming, smart and sweet. Now I see why they are such a big deal to my parents. And SURPRISE! Minnie Mae Lemonada is now a proud Mommy. Actually she doesn't really care, these turtles lay their eggs then move on. So, this past week my parents made a trip back to their house after two weeks at the MTC and found a baby turtle. Then they went back 3 more times and found 3 more baby turtles. They so graciously gave us this one.
The kids debated all morning on Saturday...Anna made a list of all our name ideas (from 'Turtle' to 'Rex'), then by themselves, they went through the process of elimination. There was some tears and some arguing, but surprisingly the vote ended up being unanimous for 'Rocky'. (If it's still alive and we find out it's a girl in 5 years the name will be Roxy). BUT even after all that, today they came up with another name while watching one of our favorite movies. 'Nacho Libre'. So they are still trying to decide today and the turtle is left nameless for now. Poor thing.
Anyways we LOVE these turtles!
